Institute of Pharmacy

More than 30,000 names of drugs of natural and synthetic origin are registered in Russia, each of which must meet the main requirements – to be effective, safe and accessible to the public. The ability to navigate in this complex but interesting world is provided by the profession of a pharmacist, which is obtained by graduates of the Institute of Pharmacy.

Today, more than 60 thousand pharmacists work in Russia – specialists with higher education. Among them are graduates of the Institute of Pharmacy of the Samara State Medical University, who work in various sectors of the pharmaceutical market. Over the entire period, more than 10 thousand pharmacists have been trained at the university.

Studying at the Institute of Pharmacy

The Institute of Pharmacy implements educational programs of a specialist (specialty 33.05.01 – “Pharmacy”), residency programs (specialties: 33.08.01 – “Pharmaceutical Technology”, 33.08.02 – “Management and Economics of Pharmacy”, 33.08.03 – “Pharmaceutical Chemistry and pharmacognosy”), postgraduate programs (specialties: 14.04.01 – “Technology for obtaining drugs”, 14.04.02 – “Pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacognosy”, 14.04.03 – “Organization of pharmaceutical business”).

Pharmaceutical education is based on knowledge of chemical, biomedical and special pharmaceutical disciplines. They are supplemented with knowledge of the organization of the pharmaceutical business, the work of pharmacy organizations, management and marketing, the management of the pharmaceutical service and pharmaceutical production, psychology and pedagogy, pharmaceutical ethics and deontology.

For the preparation of qualified pharmacists, specialized departments work at the Institute of Pharmacy: the Department of Pharmacognosy with botany and the basics of phytotherapy , the Department of Chemistry of the Institute of Pharmacy , the Department of Management and Economics of Pharmacy , the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology with a course of biotechnology , the Department of Pharmacology named after. ZDN RF Professor A. A. Lebedev.

Institute students conduct their own scientific research, in which they master various methods for developing the composition, technology and analysis of new drugs, conduct pharmacognostic studies of various types of medicinal plant materials, synthesize new compounds and investigate their biological activity, conduct organizational and economic studies of various groups of drugs.

For the moral education of pharmacists, the Institute of Pharmacy has a curatorship system. In 2005, an artistic council was created, it included creative and active students of all courses who organize inter-departmental holidays: freshman’s day, New Year, graduation parties.

Students and teachers of the Institute of Pharmacy participate in various sports events held at Samara State Medical University and beyond. The team of the Institute of Pharmacy traditionally wins prizes in volleyball and table tennis.

AFTER GRADUATION

Graduates of the Institute of Pharmacy work in different sectors of the drug supply system: in pharmacies, in pharmaceutical enterprises for the production of drugs, in pharmacy warehouses and distribution companies, in the drug quality control system, in health care and pharmaceutical service management bodies, in  research and development laboratories, in chemical, forensic and other expert laboratories, in pharmacovigilance centers, in universities, colleges, in editorial offices of specialized medical and pharmaceutical publications, in related industries.

Training and innovation

In the structure of the Institute of Pharmacy there is a center for collective use, equipped with modern equipment, as well as a modern educational pharmacy, where undergraduate students hone the skills necessary for their future profession. Also, on the basis of the educational pharmacy, primary accreditation and primary specialized accreditation of graduates are carried out.

A modern laboratory of phytobiotechnology has been created at the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology with a course in biotechnology.

Practical training of students of the Institute of Pharmacy takes place on the basis of the best pharmaceutical organizations in the Samara region and other regions. The Institute of Pharmacy has been cooperating for years with Apteka 245 LLC in Tolyatti, Apteka No. 20 LLC in Samara, Apteka 236 LLC , with pharmaceutical companies VITA, Pharmperspektiva and others. The basis of the production practice is the pharmacies of the Clinic of Samara State Medical University, the Center for Quality Control of Medicines of the Samara Region, as well as manufacturing pharmaceutical enterprises (including the leader of the Russian pharmaceutical market “OZON”).

Scientific work

The main direction of the scientific activity of the Institute of Pharmacy is the study of natural substances and objects of natural origin. The researches of the scientists of the Institute are aimed at the creation of phytopreparations. Teachers participate in the implementation of the Strategy for the Development of the Pharmaceutical Industry until 2025 and develop new domestic import-substituting drugs of various pharmacotherapeutic groups.

In the scientific “piggy bank” of scientists of the Institute of Pharmacy there are about 100 copyright certificates and patents of the Russian Federation, about 30 developed import-substituting drugs based on medicinal plant materials, pharmacopoeial articles on state standard samples, some of which have no analogues in the world.

Since 2005, under the guidance of Professor Vladimir Kurkin, a dissertation council has been working at Samara State Medical University in the specialty “Pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacognosy”. Over the years, more than a hundred doctoral and master’s theses have been defended here. Now Samara State Medical University defends dissertators in pharmaceutical specialties from different regions of the country.

The Institute of Pharmacy has a scientific problem committee (SPC) for chemical and pharmaceutical sciences (chaired by Vladimir Kurkin). She coordinates the scientific and innovative activities of six departments of the university. NPK, together with specialists from the Ministry of Health of the Samara Region and other regions of the Volga Federal District, are developing proposals for improving the provision of drugs to the population as part of the implementation of federal and regional programs.

The staff of the Institute of Pharmacy made a great contribution to the preparation for the publication of the State Pharmacopoeia of the Russian Federation XIII and XIV editions. More than 30 pharmacopoeial articles for medicinal plant raw materials and State standard samples have been prepared, as well as the general pharmacopoeial article “Kidneys”, which was included in the domestic pharmacopoeia for the first time.

As a result of many years of scientific work, more than 500 individual substances have been isolated and identified from medicinal plants, the chemical structure of more than 50 new natural compounds has been discovered and established, state standard samples (GSO) of plant substances have been developed (rosavin, syringin, silybin, glycyram, pinostrobin, triandrin), among which four GSOs have no analogues in world practice.

The developments of the scientists of the Institute of Pharmacy were recognized as winners of various levels of grant competitions, and one of the developments – a drug for dentistry “Dentos” – became the winner of the Seliger competition.

The research results allowed the development of original and import-substituting immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective, anxiolytic, antidepressant, nootropic and antimicrobial herbal medicines.

The Institute of Pharmacy participates in experiments on spacecraft of the “Bion-M” and “Photon” series (launches in 2013 and 2014) with plant objects on the topic “Study of the impact of microgravity conditions and other factors of space flight on higher plants used in medical practice (on the example of the fruits of milk thistle, seeds of lemon balm, seeds of Schisandra chinensis). The ground-based part of the experiments with space samples is currently underway in parallel experiments; the next space experiment “Bion-M” No. 2 is planned. Work has also begun on phytobiotechnology in the international format, together with the University. Francois Rabelais Tours (France).

In December 2021, the scientific and educational center “Pharmacy” was organized as part of the institute in order to implement the program of strategic academic leadership “Priority-2030 ” .

History of the Institute

In April 1971, an order was issued by the Ministry of Health of the RSFSR on the opening of a pharmaceutical faculty at the KMI. D. I.
