Institute of Pediatrics
Modern pediatrics is a science that combines all stages of
medical care: from infancy to childhood, youth, young
age. Pediatrics forms the basis of human health and
social activity. A pediatrician is a professional who
understands the physiological processes of the
formation of a child, the maturation of organs and
systems, the risks of developing diseases and their timely prevention.
Timely, correct, high-tech diagnosis of diseases and
treatment of a child in accordance with modern Russian
standards and best foreign practices is a priority in
teaching at the Institute of Pediatrics. Over the years of
work, more than 6,000 pediatricians have graduated
from Samara State Medical University.

About the Institute
All clinical departments are located in multidisciplinary medical institutions (Samara Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital named after N. I. Ivanova , Regional Clinical Hospital named after V. D. Seredavin , Regional Clinical Cardiology Dispensary, Regional Children’s Infectious Diseases Hospital and many others), equipped with modern technology.
The director of the Institute of Pediatrics is Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Vladimir Kalinin , Professor of the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery.
Vitaly Zhirnov , Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor , Professor of the Department of Hospital Pediatrics, was appointed Deputy Director of the Institute of Pediatrics.
The Institute of Pediatrics has its own traditions, formed over 50 years of functioning of the pediatric faculty (established in 1969), a special style of work and scientific directions. The Institute of Pediatrics is 4 scientific and pedagogical schools:
Corresponding Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR Professor M. V. Sergievsky – Department of Physiology;
Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Professor G. A. Makovetskaya – Department of Hospital Pediatrics;
Honored Scientist of the RSFSR, Professor F. N. Gilmiyarova – Department of Fundamental and Clinical Biochemistry;
Laureate of the State Prize of the RSFSR, Professor I. E. Poverennova – Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery.
Thus, employees of the Department of Normal Physiology (Head of the Department – Professor Vasily Pyatin ) deal with the problems of the neurointerface ( brain-computer interface ), study biorhythmogenesis, and improve methods for studying the bioelectrical activity of the brain.
The research of the staff of the Department of Fundamental and Clinical Biochemistry (Head of the Department – Doctor of Medical Sciences Oksana Gusyakova ) allows obtaining important information about the state of human health from any biological fluid (blood, saliva), helping to quickly make the correct diagnosis.
The Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery is known in Russia and abroad for research in the field of epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, hereditary diseases of the nervous system, and functional neurosurgery. Under the guidance of the laureate of the State Prize of the RSFSR, Professor I. E. Poverennova , more than 50 dissertations were defended, including 2 doctoral ones.

Studying at the Institute of Pediatrics
Profile departments of the Institute of Pediatrics: Faculty Pediatrics , Childhood Diseases , Childhood Infections , Pediatric Surgery , Hospital Pediatrics . At the Department of Pediatrics IPO , postgraduate training is carried out with the issuance of a specialist certificate. Each department of the Institute of Pediatrics supplements and develops the previously acquired knowledge.
The graduating department at the Institute of Pediatrics is the Department of Hospital Pediatrics, where students learn the basics of nephrology, pulmonology, clinical immunology, gastroenterology, hematology, neonatology. Professional training for further work in practical public health is continuously carried out. Particular attention is paid to the issues of social pediatrics, the adaptation of children with disabilities and the problem of early intervention.
At the Department of Faculty Pediatrics, students master the basic skills of communication and treatment of young patients in the propaedeutics of childhood diseases, study the basics of the formation of children’s health.
Much attention is paid to the prevention and treatment of numerous infections in children at the Department of Children’s Infections. The use of role-playing games and rating assessment of knowledge in the learning process helps to master this complex section of pediatrics.
Students of the Institute of Pediatrics are actively engaged in scientific research and participate in all-Russian and international conferences and congresses, win prizes in the competition of student scientific works.
AFTER GRADUATION
Upon graduation, the graduate receives the qualification of a pediatrician.
After graduating from clinical residency, a specialist can work as a pediatrician , pediatric endocrinologist, cardiologist. Graduates of the Institute of Pediatrics can be both pediatric and adult specialists.

Students have the opportunity to complete international internships in more than 30 countries around the world. Such as Germany, North Macedonia, Uzbekistan, Belarus, etc.
Samara State Medical University cooperates with the non-profit organization “National Union of Medical Students “, which is a member of the International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA).

The learning process at the Institute of Pediatrics is multifaceted. This concerns not only the range of educational technologies: seminars, practical classes, role-playing games, master classes and other innovative educational technologies, but also the student’s opportunity to engage in scientific research.
The equipment at the departments of the Institute of Pediatrics and its clinical bases allows students to conduct research under the guidance of professors and associate professors, to take the first steps towards the formation of a scientific and clinical worldview.
In the center of simulation training in the specialty “pediatrics”, students have the opportunity to develop professional competencies and practical skills on modern equipment using the latest technologies. Currently, the center is one of the best in Russia.
The Institute of Pediatrics closely cooperates with the Institute of Innovative Development of the Samara State Medical University, the Research and Production Technopark, and the Startup Center , which makes it possible to quickly and efficiently implement students’ projects.
Students who are interested in scientific research have the opportunity to conduct scientific research together with scientists, being engaged in student scientific circles of departments. Here they master the skills of experimental and clinical research, take part in conferences organized by the student scientific society of our university, travel with reports to symposiums in other regions of Russia and abroad.
The most talented students after graduation continue their studies and their scientific work in clinical residency or postgraduate studies.
Employees of the Institute of Pediatrics of the Samara State Medical University regularly hold all-Russian and international forums, congresses, conferences in Samara with the invitation of leading specialists from Russia, the CIS, Europe and the USA.
History of the Institute
Pediatric education at Samara State Medical University dates back to 1969 with the founding of the Pediatric Faculty.
Well-known clinicians and scientists stood at the origins: professors Anna Miloserdova, Lia Katricheva and academician Alexander Krasnov. They have prepared a solid foundation and a coherent system of education. And half a century later, our main task is to preserve and increase the traditions and accumulated experience.
In the history of the Institute (Faculty) of Pediatrics, the deans have been associate professors and professors who have become brilliant surgeons, healthcare organizers, talented clinicians: Gennady Fokeev, Rudolf Galkin, Tatyana Stukolova, Alexey Polyakov, Natalya Rusakova, Igor Makarov.
The main qualities that a person who has chosen the path of a pediatrician should possess are kindness, love for children, and the ability to sacrifice. But the one who made the right choice will be happy to see how pain disappears in the eyes of a child and sparks of happiness and joy of life appear.
