Today, dentistry is a high-tech science that constantly improves methods of treatment and prevention of oral diseases. A dentist relieves people of pain, restores their ability to smile and gives them self-confidence.

Professionals who meet all the latest requirements are trained at the Institute of Dentistry. Over the years of work of the dental school at Samara State Medical University, about 13 thousand specialists have graduated.

42 departments participate in the training of future specialists, including four specialized ones, where 17 doctors of medical sciences, professors, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences , four honored doctors of the Russian Federation work.

About the institute

The director of the Institute of Dentistry is Professor Dmitry Trunin , Honorary President of the Dental Association of Russia, Chief Freelance Dentist of the Volga Federal District, Head of the Department of Dentistry of the Institute of Vocational Education.

Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, Professor of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Nikolai Popov , Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, Associate Professor of the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry Sergey Vinnik were appointed Deputy Directors of the Institute of Dentistry . For 15 years until 2022, Vladimir Potapov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry, held the position of Dean/Deputy Director.

The Institute of Dentistry has its own traditions, style of work and scientific directions. Thus, the staff of the Department of Therapeutic Dentistry (Head of the Department – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Mikhail Postnikov ) study methods of physical influence (laser, ultrasound) in the complex treatment of teeth and periodontal disease, endodontics and aesthetic restoration.

The problems of inflammatory diseases of the maxillofacial region, implantology and reconstructive surgery are leading at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry. The staff of the department continues to develop areas of scientific research in the field of traumatology and reconstructive surgery (head of the department – Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Ivan Bayrikov ).

Studying at the Institute of Dentistry

The Institute of Dentistry has special departments: therapeutic dentistry , maxillofacial surgery and dentistry , orthopedic dentistry and the department of pediatric dentistry and orthodontics . In addition, there is a Department of Dentistry IPO , where postgraduate training is carried out with the issuance of a specialist certificate.

At the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry (Head of the Department – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Alexander Nesterov ), students learn the basics of prosthetics for patients with partial and complete absence of teeth, implantology, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the temporomandibular joint.

Much attention is paid to the prevention of dental diseases and dental anomalies in children at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics (Head of the Department – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Grigory Stepanov ), which developed a unique program for the prevention of dental diseases.

Students of the Institute of Dentistry are actively engaged in scientific research and participate in all-Russian and international conferences, win prizes in the competition of student scientific papers.

AFTER GRADUATION

Upon graduation, the graduate receives the qualification of a dentist.

After residency, a specialist can work as a general practitioner dentist, general dentist , orthopedic dentist , dental surgeon , maxillofacial surgeon, orthodontist.

Students have the opportunity to complete international internships in Germany, North Macedonia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Belarus.

Training and innovation

In 2012, the Center for Practical Skills of the Institute of Dentistry was reorganized, which is currently one of the best training and production centers for simulation training in the specialty “Dentistry” in the country.

In the center of simulation training in the specialty “dentistry”, students have the opportunity to develop professional competencies and practical skills on modern equipment using the latest technologies.

The department is equipped with traditional dental equipment, expert class diagnostic equipment, kinesiograph, T-scan , caries detector . In addition, dental microscopes, digital technologies, intraoral scanners, milling cutters, dental printers, various implants, including those developed by Samara State Medical University with prototyping and creating individual implants, and much more have been introduced into the educational and treatment process.

In the future, it is planned to create a joint training and production center for training students on the basis of the institute, together with a number of foreign and domestic firms specializing in the production of dental products. Employees of the Samara State Medical University Institute of Dentistry regularly hold all-Russian and international forums, congresses, conferences in Samara with the invitation of leading specialists from Russia, the CIS, Europe and the USA.

History of the Institute

Dental education has been implemented at Samara State Medical University since 1966. Well-known scientists stood at the origins: professors Alexander Aminev, Maria Makienko and academician Alexander Krasnov. They have prepared a solid foundation and a coherent system of education. And half a century later, our main task is to preserve and increase the traditions and accumulated experience.

The Institute of Dentistry was opened in 1999 on the initiative of the President of the University, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Gennady Kotelnikov and Honorary Professor of the Samara State Medical University, Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, Professor Igor Fedyaev.

From 1999 to 2009, the institute was headed by Professor Igor Fedyaev, a landmark personality of the Samara Dental School, who determined the directions and prospects for the development of a new structural unit. Igor Fedyaev is a follower of the scientific school of dentists of the Samara region, founded by Professor Maria Makienko. Igor Mikhailovich headed the Scientific Society of Dentists of the Samara (Kuibyshev) Region for more than 30 years, and subsequently created the Association of Dentists of the Samara Region and since 2012 has been the Honorary President of the Dental Association of the Samara Region.
